Explanation
NOTE

The copula is the casual way to say is, am, or are in Japanese. You place it after a noun or na-adjective to make a statement.

NOTE

Unlike English, is NOT used with i-adjectives — they already function as complete predicates on their own.

It is expensive.
No だ needed — i-adjectives are complete on their own
