〜てもらう

to get somebody to do something

Explanation

NOTE

てもらう means to get somebody to do something or to have someone do something for you. You attach it after the て-form of a verb. The person you receive the favor from is marked with に.

NOTE

Unlike てくれる, which focuses on the other person kindly doing something, てもらう focuses on you as the one who receives the benefit or arranges for the action to happen.

Haha ni bentou wo tsukutte moratta.

I had my mother make me a lunch box.

友達ともだちに手伝てつだってもらった。

Tomodachi ni tetsudatte moratta.

I got my friend to help me.

先生せんせいに説明せつめいしてもらう。

Sensei ni setsumei shite morau.

I get the teacher to explain it.
