Explanation
NOTE
おうとします means to attempt to do something. It describes the moment someone tries to carry out an action, often implying the attempt may not succeed.
NOTE
You form it by taking the volitional form of a verb and adding とします. In the past tense, おうとした means someone tried to do something (but may not have completed it).
STRUCTURE

Neko ga nigeyou to shita.
The cat tried to escape.
彼は立ち上がろうとした。
Kare wa tachiagarou to shita.
He tried to stand up.
ドアを開けようとしたが、鍵がかかっていた。
Doa wo akeyou to shita ga, kagi ga kakatte ita.
I tried to open the door, but it was locked.
