~ing (verb nominalization)
Explanation
NOTE

のは and こと turn verbs into nouns — this is called nominalization. Just like English uses "-ing" (swimming is fun), Japanese wraps verbs with の or こと to use them as subjects or objects.

NOTE

の and こと are often interchangeable, but の is more personal and emotional, while こと is more abstract and formal. With expressions like できる, ある, and にする, only こと is used.
