〜ているあいだに
while ~
Explanation
NOTE
ているあいだに attaches to the ている form of a verb and means while ~ is happening. It indicates that during an ongoing action, another event takes place.
NOTE
The action after あいだに is usually a shorter, completed event that happens within the timeframe of the ongoing action. Compare with あいだ (without に), which focuses on the entire duration.
STRUCTURE

あいだに母が寝ているあいだにケーキを作った。
Haha ga nete iru aida ni keeki wo tsukutta.
I made a cake while my mother was sleeping.
待っているあいだに本を読んだ。
Matte iru aida ni hon wo yonda.
I read a book while waiting.
彼が買い物をしているあいだに電話した。
Kare ga kaimono wo shite iru aida ni denwa shita.
