was doing ~
Explanation
NOTE

ていた is the past progressive form. It attaches to the て-form of a verb and means was doing ~. It describes an action that was in progress at a specific time in the past.

NOTE

It can also describe a past state that was ongoing, such as 住んでいた (was living) or 知っていた (knew).
