一体
(what) the heck?
Explanation
NOTE
一体 is used before question words (何、誰、どこ、なぜ, etc.) to add strong emphasis or surprise — expressing just what, on earth, or the heck.
一体、何をやっているんですか。
Just what on earth are you doing?
Used with interrogative words to emphasize bewilderment, frustration, or a strong desire for an explanation.
NOTE
一体 always appears with a question or rhetorical expression. It shows the speaker is frustrated, shocked, or genuinely bewildered. Common in both spoken and written Japanese.
一体どこへ行ったんだ。
Just where on earth did he go?
Adds an emphatic, often impatient tone when you are trying to find someone or something.
