むしろ
rather
instead
Explanation
NOTE

むしろ is an adverb meaning rather or instead — it introduces a preference or a more accurate alternative.

嬉うれしいというより、むしろ悲かなしい。
Rather than happy, I am sad.
Used here to correct an assumption or refine a feeling by contrasting a less accurate descriptor with a more accurate one.
NOTE

むしろ stands alone in the sentence and does not attach to other words.

暑あついというよりむしろ蒸むし暑あつい。
Rather than hot, it is humid.
This shows how 'mushiro' functions like the English word 'rather' to clarify the state of something.
