(even) considering
Explanation
NOTE

〜にしては means for or considering it's X — the result is surprising given what X would normally suggest.

彼かれは子供こどもにしては、よく気きが利きく。
For a child, he is very thoughtful.
Expectation: a child wouldn't be very thoughtful. Reality: he is.
NOTE

The clause after にしては shows a gap between expectation (based on X) and the actual outcome.

NOTE

With nouns, attach にしては directly to the noun (学生 → 学生にしては).

Shoshinsha ni shite wa, yoku dekite iru.
Considering he is a beginner, he is doing well.
冬ふゆにしては、暖あたたかい日ひだ。
Fuyu ni shite wa, atatakai hi da.
Considering it is winter, it is a warm day.
彼かれは新人しんじんにしては、仕事しごとが早はやい。
Kare wa shinjin nishiteha, shigoto ga hayai.
For a newcomer, he works quickly.
今日きょうは夏なつにしては、涼すずしい。
Kyou wa natsu nishiteha, suzushii.
For summer, today is cool.
この店みせは高級店こうきゅうてんにしては、安やすい。
Kono mise wa koukyuuten nishiteha, yasui.
Considering it's a high-end store, it's cheap.
NOTE

With verbs, attach にしては to the plain form (勉強した → 勉強したにしては).

Naganen Nihon ni sunde iru ni shite wa, nihongo ga hanasenai.
Considering he has lived in Japan for many years, he cannot speak Japanese.
準備じゅんびしたにしては、発表はっぴょうがうまくいかなかった。
Junbi shita ni shite wa, happyou ga umaku ikanakatta.
Considering how much I prepared, the presentation did not go well.
毎日まいにち練習れんしゅうしているにしては、上達じょうたつしない。
Mainichi renshuu shite iru nishiteha, joutatsu shinai.
Considering he practices every day, he doesn't improve.
たくさん勉強べんきょうしたにしては、点数てんすうが低ひくい。
Takusan benkyou shita nishiteha, tensuu ga hikui.
Considering he studied a lot, his score is low.
