Explanation
NOTE
〜かけ・〜かける means halfway done or in the middle of — the action has started but is not yet complete.
食べかけのケーキが机の上にある。
There is a half-eaten cake on the desk.
〜かけ (kake) attached to a verb stem indicates an action that has been started but not finished.
NOTE
かけ is the noun form (e.g., 食べかけのパン). かける is the verb form (e.g., 話しかける). Both attach to the [V][~~ます~~] stem.
STRUCTURE

かけ読みかけの本を鞄に入れた。
Yomikake no hon wo kaban ni ireta.
I put the half-read book in my bag.
書きかけの手紙を引き出しにしまった。
Kakikake no tegami wo hikidashi ni shimatta.
I put the half-written letter away in the drawer.
飲みかけのコーヒーが冷めてしまった。
Nomikake no koohii ga samete shimatta.
The half-drunk coffee went cold.
