Explanation
NOTE
〜（よ）うとする uses the volitional form + とする to express attempting or being on the verge of doing something.
ドアを開けようとしたが、鍵がかかっていた。
I tried to open the door, but it was locked.
The attempt was made but not necessarily successful.
NOTE
The focus is on the attempt itself — not whether it succeeded.
木に登ろうとする猫。
A cat trying to climb a tree.
Used here to describe an ongoing state or an action about to happen.
NOTE
Often paired with が to show what happened next. Compare: とする (present), とした (past attempt), としたが (tried but...).
声を出そうとしたが、出なかった。
I tried to speak, but no voice came out.
Indicates an attempt to perform an action that was unsuccessful.
