GRAMMAR
〜のに
even though ~
despite
Explanation
NOTE
〜のに expresses contrast with an emotional nuance — even though or despite — often surprise, disappointment, or frustration.
一生懸命練習したのに、試合に負けた。
Even though I practiced hard, I lost the match.
Used here to express a feeling of disappointment or frustration where the result contradicts the effort.
NOTE
Unlike が or けど (neutral contrast), のに always carries an emotional undertone. The reality contradicts what was expected.
