Explanation
NOTE
〜に当たる means corresponds to, is equivalent to, or amounts to. It maps something to its equivalent in another system, category, or framework.
今年は創立百周年に当たる。
This year corresponds to the hundredth anniversary of the founding.
Used here to express that a specific date or period marks a particular event or anniversary.
NOTE
It is more formal and analytical than simply saying です. It is used when explaining equivalences — foreign concepts mapped to Japanese, or time periods measured in another unit.
「先生」は英語の「teacher」に当たる。
"Sensei" corresponds to the English word "teacher".
Used to explain the meaning or translation of a word by comparing it to its equivalent in another language.
