NOTE
〜に反して means contrary to or against — reality turns out to be the opposite of what X (expectations, wishes, or rules) indicated.
予想に反して、試合に負けた。
Contrary to expectations, we lost the match.
This grammar point is used to express that an outcome or event happened in a way that is the opposite of what was expected or predicted.
