う・よう + としたが
tried to ~ but ~.
Explanation
NOTE
〜（よ）うとしたが uses the volitional form + としたが to say someone tried but failed or was prevented.
電話しようとしたが、電池が切れていた。
I tried to call, but the battery had run out.
This pattern is used to indicate that you had the intention to do something, but were unable to complete the action.
NOTE
The が means but, showing contrast between the attempt and what actually happened.
謝ろうとしたが、言葉が出なかった。
I tried to apologize, but the words wouldn't come out.
It expresses a failed attempt where the action was interrupted or prevented by external or internal circumstances.

Nigeyō to shita ga, tsukamatta.
I tried to escape, but I was caught.
起きようとしたが、体が動かなかった。
Okiyō to shita ga, karada ga ugokanakatta.

Koe o dasō to shita ga, kowakute denakatta.
