on the way to
Explanation
NOTE

けに means on the way (to/from doing something) — an action done in passing, while heading somewhere.

かえけにスーパーにった。
On the way home, I stopped by the supermarket.
帰り (return) + 掛けに = while heading home. The action 寄った happens during that journey.
NOTE

It attaches only to verbs of movement (going, coming, leaving, returning). Common fixed forms: けに, かえけに, けに.

NOTE

Form: take the ます-stem of a movement verb and add 掛けに (行きます → けに).
