NOTE

〜一方いっぽう（で） means on one hand or while — used to present two contrasting sides.

兄あには静しずかだ。弟おとうとは明あかるい一方いっぽうで、よく話はなす。
My older brother is quiet. On the other hand, my younger brother is cheerful and talks a lot.
Used to compare two contrasting things, people, or situations.
NOTE

It can also mean while also — describing two parallel aspects of one subject at once.

NOTE

With verbs, attach 一方（で） directly to the dictionary form (働はたらく → 働はたらく一方で).

Kare wa hataraku ippou de, daigaku ni mo kayotte iru.
While he works, he also attends university.
物価ぶっかが上あがる一方いっぽうで、給料きゅうりょうは変かわらない。
Bukka ga agaru ippou de, kyuuryou wa kawaranai.
While prices rise, salaries don't change.
姉あねは料理りょうりが得意とくいな一方いっぽう、掃除そうじは苦手にがてだ。
Ane wa ryouri ga tokui na ippou, souji wa nigate da.
While my sister is good at cooking, she's bad at cleaning.
NOTE

With na-adjectives, insert な before 一方（で） (静しずか → 静しずかな一方で).

Kanojo wa majime na ippou, yuumoa mo aru.
While she is serious, she also has a sense of humor.
この仕事しごとは大変たいへんな一方いっぽうで、やりがいがある。
Kono shigoto wa taihen na ippou de, yarigai ga aru.
While this job is tough, it's rewarding.
NOTE

With nouns, insert である before 一方（で） (母親ははおや → 母親ははおやである一方で).
