Explanation
NOTE
〜ものだ and 〜ものではない express social norms — what one should or shouldn't do as a matter of common sense or proper conduct.
年上の人には敬語を使うものだ。
You should use polite language with people older than you.
Used to state a general rule of conduct, not a personal opinion.
NOTE
Use 〜ものだ to say that something should be done — it is the conventional, expected behavior in society.
STRUCTURE

ものだ困ったときは、互いに助け合うものだ。
Komatta toki wa, tagai ni tasukeau mono da.
When in trouble, it is natural to help each other.
若い時は、よく失敗するものだ。
Wakai toki wa, yoku shippai suru mono da.
It is natural to make mistakes when you are young.
親はいつまでも子供の心配をするものだ。
Oya wa itsu made mo kodomo no shinpai o suru mono da.
It is natural for parents to always worry about their children.
約束は守るものだ。
Yakusoku wa mamoru mono da.
You should keep your promises.
困っている人は助けるものだ。
Komatte iru hito wa tasukeru mono da.
You should help people who are in trouble.
挨拶は自分からするものだ。
Aisatsu wa jibun kara suru mono da.
You should greet others first yourself.
NOTE
Use 〜ものではない to say that something shouldn't be done — it goes against social norms or proper conduct.
NOTE
Attach 〜ものではない directly to the verbs dictionary form (食べる → 食べるものではない).

You shouldn't speak badly of others.
食べ物を残すものではない。

You shouldn't tell lies.
