NOTE
〜にもかかわらず means despite or although — used in formal writing and speech.
大雨にもかかわらず、試合は行われた。
Despite the heavy rain, the match was held.
Expresses an unexpected result given the first situation.
NOTE
The result clause expresses something contrary to what you would expect from the first clause.
NOTE
With nouns, attach にもかかわらず directly to the noun (大雨 → 大雨にもかかわらず).
