Explanation
NOTE
〜たとたんに means the moment or as soon as — used when something unexpected happens immediately after the first action.
家を出ったとたんに、雨が降り出した。
The moment I left the house, it started to rain.
The result is usually surprising, sudden, or beyond the speaker's control.
NOTE
Both clauses describe past, completed events that happened in quick succession. The second clause is in the past tense and never expresses a command, invitation, or volitional plan.
NOTE
〜たとたんに can also be written with kanji as 〜た途端に — both forms are interchangeable, and the に is sometimes dropped in casual writing.
NOTE
Attach 〜とたんに directly to the verb past form (V-た). It is not used with adjectives or nouns.

Kanojo o mita totan ni shinzou ga doki doki shita.
The instant I saw her, my heart started pounding.
電気を消したとたんに眠くなった。
Denki o keshita totan ni nemuku natta.
The moment I turned off the lights, I felt sleepy.
ドアを開けたとたんに猫が逃げ出した。
Doa o aketa totan ni neko ga nigedashita.
The instant I opened the door, the cat ran away.
立ち上がったとたんに、めまいがした。
Tachiagatta totan ni, memai ga shita.
The moment I stood up, I felt dizzy.
ドアを開けたとたんに、猫が飛び出してきた。
Doa wo aketa totan ni, neko ga tobidashite kita.
As soon as I opened the door, the cat jumped out.
窓を開けたとたんに、冷たい風が入ってきた。
Mado wo aketa totan ni, tsumetai kaze ga haitte kita.
The moment I opened the window, a cold wind came in.
