GRAMMAR
その上
besides
furthermore
Explanation
NOTE
その上 (そのうえ) means moreover or on top of that. It is a sentence-initial connector used to add further information to what was just said.
この店は安い。その上、おいしい。
This restaurant is cheap. On top of that, it's delicious.
Used to stack a second positive point on top of a first one.
NOTE
The two clauses should have the same polarity — both positive or both negative. Mixing a positive and a negative point sounds unnatural with その上.
彼は遅刻した。その上、宿題も忘れた。
He was late. On top of that, he also forgot his homework.
Two negative facts stacked together.
NOTE
その上 is slightly formal — common in written and polite spoken Japanese. In casual speech, しかも is more frequent, but in essays and news, その上 is preferred.
