Explanation
NOTE
〜得ない (えない) means cannot V or it is impossible to V. It is the negative form of 〜得る.
そんなことは信じ得ない。
Such a thing cannot be believed.
Used to express logical or theoretical impossibility, not lack of skill.
NOTE
〜得ない expresses that something is impossible by nature or logic — it is not used for personal inability (use 〜られない for that).
NOTE
It often appears in formal writing, news, and academic contexts. Common pairings include 考え得ない, 信じ得ない, あり得ない.
NOTE
Attach 〜得ない to the verb masu-stem (the ます-form without ます). For example, 考えます → 考え得ない, あります → あり得ない.
