Explanation
NOTE
〜（よ）うとする means try to — a deliberate attempt or effort to do something.
彼は真実を隠そうとする。
He tries to hide the truth.
Often used when the attempt is ongoing or repeated.
NOTE
It can also mean be about to — describing an action on the verge of happening.
家を出ようとした時、電話が鳴った。
When I was about to leave the house, the phone rang.
The past form 〜（よ）うとした often pairs with 時 to describe interrupted actions.
NOTE
Attach とする to the volitional form of a verb (食べる → 食べようとする, 行く → 行こうとする).
STRUCTURE

Densha ga shuppatsu shiyou to suru.
The train is about to depart.
重い荷物を持とうとする。
Omoi nimotsu o motou to suru.
I am trying to lift the heavy luggage.
猫が机の上に乗ろうとする。
Neko ga tsukue no ue ni norou to suru.
The cat is trying to get on the desk.
子供が立とうとするが、すぐ転んでしまう。
Kodomo ga tatou to suru ga, sugu koronde shimau.
The child tries to stand up, but soon falls down.
電車が発車しようとしたその時、彼が飛び乗った。
Densha ga hassha shiyou to shita sono toki, kare ga tobinotta.
Just as the train was about to depart, he jumped on.
彼女は毎日早く起きようとする。
Kanojo wa mainichi hayaku okiyou to suru.
She tries to wake up early every day.
