Explanation
NOTE
〜にすぎない means no more than, merely, or just — it limits or downplays what came before.
彼は子供にすぎない。
He is nothing more than a child.
Emphasizes that the subject is *only* this and nothing more.
NOTE
It often carries a tone of modesty, dismissal, or understatement about the subject's value or scope.
NOTE
With nouns, attach にすぎない directly to the dictionary form (学生 → 学生にすぎない).
STRUCTURE

Watashi wa ichi gakusei ni suginai.
I am nothing more than a student.
それは言い訳にすぎない。
Sore wa iiwake ni suginai.

This is merely a rumor.
これは単純な勘違いにすぎない。
Kore wa tanjun na kanchigai ni suginai.
This is nothing more than a simple misunderstanding.

Sono hanashi wa uwasa ni suginai.
That story is nothing more than a rumor.
私はただの学生にすぎない。
Watashi wa tada no gakusei ni suginai.
I am nothing more than a student.
NOTE
It often follows numbers or small quantities to emphasize that the amount is only that much.
参加者は十人にすぎなかった。
The participants were only ten people.
Past form: にすぎなかった = *was only / was nothing more than*.
NOTE
With verbs, attach にすぎない to the plain form (言う → 言うにすぎない).

Kare wa tetsudatta dake da, sekinin o totta koto ni suginai.
He only helped; it is nothing more than taking responsibility.
これは単なる意見を言った事にすぎない。
Kore wa tannaru iken o itta koto ni suginai.
This is nothing more than stating a simple opinion.
