Explanation
NOTE
〜ないことには means unless you do X, (Y won't happen) — it presents an action as a necessary precondition.
試してみないことには、分からない。
Unless you try it, you won't know.
The action before *ないことには* is the indispensable step that must happen first.
NOTE
The clause that follows is almost always negative — something that won't happen, can't be judged, or won't improve without the prior action.
NOTE
Attach ことには directly to the ない-form of a verb (食べない → 食べないことには).

Jissai ni atte minai koto ni wa, hitogara wa wakaranai.
