Explanation
NOTE
〜ともなく〜ている means doing something unconsciously or absent-mindedly — without any clear intention.
窓の外を見るともなく見ている。
I am absent-mindedly looking outside the window.
NOTE
The same verb is repeated: once before ともなく and once in the 〜ている form. It is formal and literary.
彼の話を聞くともなく聞いていた。
I was absent-mindedly listening to his story.
The action happens, but the speaker was not paying focused attention to it.
NOTE
Attach ともなく to a verb in dictionary form, then repeat the same verb in the 〜ている form.
STRUCTURE

テレビを見るともなく見ている。
Terebi o miru tomonaku mite iru.
I am absent-mindedly watching TV.
音楽を聞くともなく聞いている。
Ongaku o kiku tomonaku kiite iru.
I am absent-mindedly listening to music.
雑誌を読むともなく読んでいた。
Zasshi o yomu tomonaku yonde ita.
I was absent-mindedly reading a magazine.
NOTE
〜ともなしに〜ている is the same meaning with a slightly softer, more literary tone. It is fully interchangeable.

Attach ともなしに to a verb in dictionary form, then repeat the same verb in the 〜ている form.
