〜たら〜で
even if
Explanation
NOTE
〜たら〜で means even if / if — whichever way a situation turns out, there is still some issue or feeling.
お金があったらあったで、使いすぎてしまう。
Even if I have money, I end up spending too much.
NOTE
The same word is repeated: 〜たら then 〜で. It says the outcome is fine, yet still brings a small problem.
休みがなかったらなかったで、楽しめる。
Even if there is no holiday, I can still enjoy myself.
It often expresses acceptance: whatever happens, it works out somehow.
NOTE
With a verb, repeat the plain past た form: 〜たら then 〜たで. The same word fills both slots.
STRUCTURE
Vたら〜[V][た]で
試験に受かったら受かったで、大変だ。
Shiken ni ukattara ukatta de, taihen da.
Even if I pass the exam, it will be tough.
仕事が終わったら終わったで、寂しくなる。
Shigoto ga owattara owatta de, sabishiku naru.
Even when the work ends, I feel a bit lonely.
雨が降ったら降ったで、家で過ごせる。
Ame ga futtara futta de, ie de sugoseru.
Even if it rains, I can spend time at home.
