NOTE
〜かたわら means while / alongside — doing one main activity and another activity in parallel.
彼は働くかたわら、小説を書いている。
While working, he also writes novels.
NOTE
It is formal and written. The first activity is the main one; the second is a long-term side pursuit.
母は家事のかたわら、近所の子供に英語を教えている。
Alongside the housework, my mother teaches English to neighborhood children.
Both activities continue over a long period, not just a single moment.
NOTE
Attach かたわら to a verb in dictionary form. The verb names the main, ongoing activity.

While studying at university, she also does volunteer work.

Alongside working at a company, my father paints pictures.
彼は農業を営むかたわら、町の歴史を研究している。
Kare wa nougyou o itonamu katawara, machi no rekishi o kenkyuu shite iru.
While running a farm, he researches the town's history.
私は小説を書くかたわら、英語の先生をしています。
Watashi wa shousetsu o kaku katawara, eigo no sensei o shite imasu.
I work as an English teacher while writing novels.
彼は会社で働くかたわら、大学院で研究をしています。
Kare wa kaisha de hataraku katawara, daigakuin de kenkyuu o shite imasu.
He does research at graduate school while working at a company.
母は料理を教えるかたわら、料理教室の運営もしています。
Haha wa ryouri o oshieru katawara, ryouri-kyoushitsu no un'ei mo shite imasu.
My mother manages a cooking school alongside teaching cooking.
