Explanation
NOTE
〜次第です means that is why — it explains the reason or background behind a situation.
急に用事ができて、欠席した次第です。
Something urgent came up, and that is why I was absent.
NOTE
It is formal and used in business or written explanations to politely justify a result.
事情を説明するために、お電話した次第です。
That is why I called you, to explain the circumstances.
次第です summarizes the reasoning that led to the action just mentioned.
NOTE
Attach 次第です to a verb in plain form. The verb states the result being explained.
