Explanation
NOTE
〜までだ and 〜までのことだ mean it is only / just because — the speaker explains a reason simply.
事実を言ったまでだ。
I only told the truth.
NOTE
It downplays an action — I just did X, nothing more. The tone is formal and often defensive or modest.
気になったので聞いたまでのことだ。
I just asked because I was curious.
までのことだ is a slightly softer, more explanatory variant of までだ.
NOTE
For までだ, attach までだ to a verb in plain past form (〜た).
STRUCTURE

までだ心配だったので、声を掛けたまでだ。
Shinpai datta node, koe o kaketa made da.
I only spoke to you because I was worried.
本当のことを思ったまでだ。
Hontou no koto o omotta made da.
I just thought what was true.
道を教えたまでだ。
Michi o oshieta made da.
I only told you the way.
電車で行ったまでだ。
Densha de itta made da.
I just went by train. (That's all.)
彼は本当のことを言ったまでだ。
Kare wa hontou no koto o itta made da.
He just told the truth. (Nothing more.)
私はただ手伝ったまでだ。
Watashi wa tada tetsudatta made da.
I just helped out. (That's all there is to it.)
NOTE
For までのことだ, attach までのことだ to a verb in plain past form (〜た).

I just thought it was right.
約束を守ったまでのことだ。
Yakusoku o mamotta made no koto da.
I just kept my promise.

Shigoto o tetsudatta made no koto da.
I just helped with the work.
彼が言ったことは、単に事実を伝えたまでのことだ。
Kare ga itta koto wa, tan ni jijitsu o tsutaeta made no koto da.
What he said was just conveying the facts.
もし試験に落ちたら、もう一度勉強し直すまでのことだ。
Moshi shiken ni ochitara, mou ichido benkyou shinaosu made no koto da.
If I fail the exam, I will just study it over again.
そんなに謝らなくても、少し手伝ったまでのことだ。
Sonna ni ayamaranakutemo, sukoshi tetsudatta made no koto da.
