NOTE
〜は〜てのことだ means is because of — it explains the reason behind an action or situation.
厳しく叱ったのは、君を思ってのことだ。
I scolded you harshly because I care about you.
NOTE
The first part marked by は is the result; the part before てのことだ gives the hidden reason.
彼が黙っているのは、みんなを守ってのことだ。
He stays silent because he wants to protect everyone.
It is **formal** and often used to reveal a considerate or hidden motive.
NOTE
Attach てのことだ to the te-form of a verb that expresses the reason or intention.
