〜つ〜つ
~ and ~ (alternating)
Explanation
NOTE
〜つ〜つ means ...and... — it pairs two opposite actions that happen by turns, one then the other, repeatedly.
波の上でボートが浮きつ沈みつしている。
The boat is bobbing up and down on the waves.
NOTE
It is literary and fixed. The two verbs are opposites, and the pattern is set — you cannot freely swap verbs.
彼は部屋の中を行きつ戻りつしていた。
He was pacing back and forth in the room.
The phrase usually ends with する or している to describe the ongoing scene.
NOTE
Attach つ to the verb stem (the ます base) for each of the two slots, then end with する.

木の葉が風に浮きつ沈みつ流れていく。
Konoha ga kaze ni ukitsu shizumitsu nagarete iku.
The leaves drift along, rising and sinking in the wind.
二人は追いつ追われつの競争をした。
Futari wa oitsu owaretsu no kyousou o shita.
The two raced, chasing and being chased.
彼女は店先を行きつ戻りつしていた。
Kanojo wa misesaki o ikitsu modoritsu shite ita.
She kept walking back and forth in front of the shop.
