〜つつ（も） ①
while
Explanation
NOTE
〜つつ means while — two actions are performed by the same person at the same time.
音楽を聞きつつ、勉強した。
While listening to music, I studied.
NOTE
It is formal and written, much like 〜ながら. Both actions are done together by one subject.
景色を楽しみつつ、歩いた。
While enjoying the scenery, I walked.
つつ describes two simultaneous actions, with the second clause as the main one.
NOTE
Attach つつ to the verb stem — the ます-form without ます, such as 聞き or 見.
STRUCTURE
Vます
つつコーヒーを飲みつつ、新聞を読んだ。
Koohii o nomitsutsu, shinbun o yonda.
While drinking coffee, I read the newspaper.
未来を考えつつ、計画を立てた。
Mirai o kangaetsutsu, keikaku o tateta.
While thinking about the future, I made a plan.
友達と話しつつ、料理を作った。
Tomodachi to hanashitsutsu, ryouri o tsukutta.
While talking with a friend, I cooked.
悪いと思いつつ、友達に嘘を言ってしまいました。
Warui to omoi-tsutsu, tomodachi ni uso o itte shimaimashita.
While thinking it was wrong, I ended up lying to my friend.
この本を読みつつ、新しい言葉を勉強しています。
Kono hon o yomi-tsutsu, atarashii kotoba o benkyou shite imasu.
While reading this book, I am studying new vocabulary.
ダイエットを始めつつ、甘いものを食べてしまいました。
Daietto o hajime-tsutsu, amai mono o tabete shimaimashita.
While starting a diet, I ended up eating something sweet.
