Explanation
NOTE

〜たなり means while ...ing or remaining — a state is left unchanged after one action.

彼かれは立たったなり動うごかなかった。
He stayed standing and did not move.
NOTE

It shows that an expected next action never came. The first state simply continues, often unnaturally.

息子むすこは出でかけたなり帰かえってこない。
My son went out and has not come back since.
The expected return never happens, so the going-out state lingers.
NOTE

Attach なり to a verb in the た form. It is formal and literary, common in written narration.

She lay down and kept sleeping like that.

My friend borrowed the book and has not returned it since.
彼かれは窓まどの外そとを見みたなり黙だまっていた。
Kare wa mado no soto o mita nari damatte ita.
He looked out the window and stayed silent like that.
その本ほんは開ひらいたなり、ずっと机つくえの上うえに置おいてあります。
Sono hon wa hiraita nari, zutto tsukue no ue ni oite arimasu.
That book has been left on the desk, remaining open.
彼女彼女かのじょは家いえを出でたなり、どこかへ行いってしまいました。
Kanojo wa ie o deta nari, dokoka e itte shimaimashita.
As soon as she left the house, she went off somewhere.
父ちちは椅子いすに座すわったなり、眠ねむってしまいました。
Chichi wa isu ni suwatta nari, nemutte shimaimashita.
My father fell asleep while still sitting in the chair.
