Explanation
NOTE
〜こととて means due to or since — it gives a reason that excuses or explains a result.
慣れない仕事のこととて、ミスをしてしまった。
Since it was unfamiliar work, I made a mistake.
NOTE
It is formal and literary, often used in apologies to soften blame for an unavoidable result.
子供のしたこととて、どうかお許しください。
Since it was something a child did, please forgive it.
こととて is common in set apologetic phrases asking for understanding.
NOTE
With a verb, attach こととて directly to the plain form, including the past tense.

Kyuu ni kimatta kototote, junbi ga ma ni awanakatta.
Since it was decided suddenly, the preparations were not ready in time.
何も知らないこととて、失礼な言葉を使ってしまった。
Nani mo shiranai kototote, shitsurei na kotoba o tsukatte shimatta.
Since I knew nothing, I ended up using rude words.
初めて訪ねることとて、道に迷ってしまった。
Hajimete tazuneru kototote, michi ni mayotte shimatta.
Since it was my first visit, I got lost on the way.
急ぐ事とて、失礼いたしました。
Isogu kototote, shitsurei itashimashita.
Since I was in a hurry, I apologize for my rudeness.
不慣れな場所に来る事とて、少し緊張しています。
Funare na basho ni kuru kototote, sukoshi kinchou shite imasu.
Due to coming to an unfamiliar place, I am a little nervous.
何も知らなかった事とて、お許しください。
Nani mo shiranakatta kototote, o-yurushi kudasai.
Since I did not know anything about it, please forgive me.
NOTE
With a noun, connect it using の before こととて.
